Well, Mussorgsky was sometimes a little over expectant of the piano. FF was maybe his attempt at making an old style piano sound louder than modern day ones can.In 'The Old Castle' he writes a crescendo on a held piano note.

The first (I think) oboist and the leftmost violinist get really into it. They're all over the place.
