There has been rumors of the sort saying that hell girl is real but it may just be based of of Japanese myths and legends. They don't necessarily hate Ai. They needed a child of seven years old to be sacrificed every 7 years. This is because the number seven means good harvest for crops. They think she's a monster because the village children say they saw her bring a butterfly back to life. If her parents interfered they would be killed. They told Sentarou to hide her, though. :)

one thing for sure Japan have this kind of culture .... Harakiri,Sacrifi any thing for dignity and nature.. Enma ai is very similar to SADAKO ... i guess u know why ... she has a red eye and always misunderstood the villager make her devil
