In this clip from the 1950's-60s British comedy group "Beyond the Fringe," Dudley Moore plays a very funny but also very musically well-done parody of a Beethoven Piano Sonata, using the famous whistling tune from "Bridge Over the River Kwai" as a thematic subject.

He looks rather much like Rowan Atkinson

Back in 1996 I was stuck in an elevator with him and Issac Stern in Carnegie Hall while we were going up to see Alfred Brendel. He did not look so healthy and I guess he was on his way out. Poor Guy.

Though one could also argue that the opening unison melody is an allusion to other pieces but the fifth. I personally found it reminiscent of the opening of "Appassionata".

the ending cadence has to be the fifth though, I can't think of any sonatas with such a long cadence. In any case it's very clever and musical. I actually think Dudley was at least as good a musician as he was a comedian. A brilliant man.

Yes, this is clearly a parody of a Beethoven piano sonata (and, incidentally, of some of the more mannered approaches to playing one), although the opening unison melody is also intended (for obvious reasons) to evoke the opening of the Fifth Symphony. Both this work and the "Pathetique" Sonata - perhaps the principal model for the parody here - are in C minor, the key of Moore's spoof piece.

He's combined those two songs masterfully.

It's actually a parody of the traditional march tune "Colonel Bogey" (see the film "Bridge over the River Kwai") done in the style of Beethoven. You're not as smart as you think you are.
