dude the language itself is Braj (old form of hindi) which dates back long before islam or sufism came into being .. wajid ali shah was a patron of arts where these songs were performed .. the lyrics are metaphorical and contain references to god Krishna

Go check your facts...firstly the thumri was invented in the court of Nawab Wajad Ali Shah in the 19th Century...read "Dance in Thumri" by Projesh Banerji. Secondly I agree that Thumris are about seperation sometimes of religious figures but they were used as METAPHORS for something else by Sufis. Nusrat did a qawali called "Ni mein jaana Jogi dey naal. Jogi nahi, koi roop hai rab dha" on the face on it using hindu theme but its sufi...listen to it. p.s. Amir Khurau invented the sitar and tabla

it has . the song is based on the love of Radha and Krishna(the hindu god). there are many type of love songs which tell stories of their love. this one is based on the separation of the two lovers. this type of love songs(based on separation and longing) are called thumris.

oh dude get over the sufi thing .. its not related to sufism at all .. the lyrics date back to the time when islam wasnt even born .. infact the song is born frm hinduism and alludes to the love of Radha and Krishna(the hindu god). the form of classical music is called 'Thumri'. the theme of Thumris is separation of lovers. here the lover is complaining that the river has become an enemy and is not letting her cross it to meet her beloved.
