I can certainly see how you would mistake this for aikido since it is so very similar to jujutsu, but I'm afraid this is actually jujutsu. Nihon jujutsu to be exact, as taught by one of Shizuya Sato's top students. Shizuya Sato is the founder of our system.

this is not jujitsu this is aikido

I'm agreeing with you on that. I think learning different applications is good. Helps you visualize more possibilities than just what you were taught. I like going to the inside for targeting the face, torso, groin, etc., as well as going to the outside for getting out of the way of the attack. I think doing both is practical. :)

nothing 'wrong' with what you did. We just learn it a little differently at my dojo... and One thing Ive learned is that its good to learn em multiple ways to see what fits you. I prefer to go 'outside' against a straight punch/push/grab for two reasons: you can take their momentum forward easier, and it gets you off centerline in case they swing with the other hand. All in all a great video though.

Sorry, Brent...accidentally removed your comment, so I reposted it.I appreciate the input. This is the way we were taught here at JMAC, so that's how I had to perform it for this test. But I'll keep what you said in mind for other applications of ude gatame.

BrentShriver: Good stuff for the most part. One thing I noticed on your ude gatame @ 1:35-1:49 in the video. Try to step to the outside to use that move instead of inside. You can go with their momentum this way instead of reversing their direction. Also if you do go inside when you go under their arm, use the hand that you are going to place on the elbow to maintain pressure on their arm the entire time. It looks like you are givig him a split second where you let up before you press the elbow.

I tried to send you a PM but it's locked only to your friends..Anyhow I was wondering about the address of where it's located. I am in the AA area and would like to sit and view if the school allows it. Thanks!

Very nice.I've done judo, so I could see the similarities in the testing, but the differences were more interesting.
