Murray Head sang the part of Judas on the original concept album. Carl Anderson played the part in the movie.

Cool note: Often live in concert, Ian Gillan sings a tiny snippet from Jesus Christ Superstar. If you can (I'm sure it's here on youtube somewhere), look for a clip of Deep Purple live "Perfect Strangers". Often, at the end of the song, he sings "I dont want to taste your poison..." pretty cool if you know where that is from ;-)

This is amazing, this is an example of why Gillan continues to be one of my biggest influences as a vocalist, he is very diverse and doesn't stick to one style, plus his falsetto's, screams and vocal belting have influenced me a-lot as-well

no, I hope I didnt confuse the issue. Judas is the same on the first album (the brown cover) and was also in the movie that came out later, in the 70's. I am just of the opinion that Judas sang his parts better, with more confidence and zeal, in the film, then he did on the album. And I think Ian Gillan would have sung better as well, had he stayed to do the film as well. Anyone who wants to hear Ian Gillan do JCSS, it is the brown cover with the gold circle, the original.

Wait...When was the original Judas featured in a film?The Judas in the 1973 movie was different from the original album...That said: I agree with you. Ted Neeley had the benefit of hearing someone else sing it first.

Anyone critical of Ian Gillan should keep in mind one factor: He sang these songs first, 'interpreted' them! He wanted to play Jesus in the film, but Deep Purple had touring plans, and he was forced to turn it down. Enter Ted Neely.Had Gillan been able to do the film too, he'd certainly have sung it even better than the album, as Judas did (compare Judas' later film performance to the earlier album. Film is stronger & more melodious, more confident. Ian did not have this 2nd opportunity)

Zeeboe. Just because Ted took the job out of neccessity doesn't mean he took it more seriously than Gillan. Most people feel that Gillan was a way better singer on this song and I must agree.

I can see why some people think Jesus Christ Superstar is an anti-Christian rock opera. It's because of guys like Ian Gillan. He makes Jesus come across as weak and almost even comical. Neeley actually took the role seriously. So forget Ian Gillan and screw all of you for actually thinking that clown can hold a candle to Neeley, and a double screw you for any past, present and future thumbs downs you give me. Thumbs down me all you want because I don't give a crap what any of you people think.
