Fred Remington in the 1880s said that the real cowboys were the guys right after the Civil War. As soon as fences came in the 'cowboy' became just a hired ranch hand who had to take orders from the cattle kings who bought all the range land. If you can find it watch the dvd of the old TV docu on the Winning of the West. Great photos, and it was the last film work Gary Cooper ever did.
