The goal of a time traveler is not to prove to the people in the past you traveled to the past, the goal is to prove your trip occured to people from your time. By being here and making this ripple he has done just that. On his return to 2036 he can clearly show the proof that he was here. He only needed to provide enough info to keep the rumor's alive, if he appeared and did nothing there would be no future proof.
