Actually, in a 1982 interview, Peter said that this song was about seeing his ex girlfriend with another man while he was high on cocaine. He was talking about drugs being a monkey on his back.

sorry to disagree, I cut Peter's hair and the real deal about shock the monkey is this:this song is about sending the first monkey into space and having to deal with the psychological turmoil of seeing the monkeys expressions as it was fatally tested for a reaction to that dry pressure vaccuum that is space. |
