I don't know, i've always had the impression that Immortals are very good choice to have amongst your army, the Toughness 5 goes a long way against enemy weapons. Usually you'd only include a couple of squads of five or a squad of ten if your Necron Lord has the Veil of Darkness. But most the Elite Necrons aren't generally used, the Pariahs inparticular, since they're just too expensive and don't really do much.

yes but when you see a normal necron player will usually only include 1500 points at the most in his army which practically only includes destroyers, lord, c'tan, warriors and some times a monolith because buying elite necrons aren't always the best choice to make, but your exactly right that 5th edition may also be bringing a new necron battle force

The only reason why the Necron Battleforce has so little in the way of variety, is due to the fact that Necrons have so few plastic models, and Battleforces are made with the intention of being all Plastic. When Necrons get some 5th Edition love, we may see things like Plastic Immortals and Flayed Ones, meaning we may well see a new and improved Battleforce with a lot more variety.
