It's all about interpretation with a cover. As popular as these "trembly-voiced emotion" covers have been in recent years, it's obvious that it works to some extent. Actually, I don't even like the Leonard Cohen version BECAUSE it is so flat and emotionless.

Leonard Cohen's own version is the best. He doesn't over-emote, which is exactly how it should be. It's a song about being in a state of emotional deadness. All these covers are all done with trembly-voiced emotion, and I don't think it sits well with the lyrics. |
