The plane must be moving about 80 knots to have enough airflow for the rudder to move the nose of the airplane left or right. You are correct that while moving slowly on the ground, the pilot steers with the wheel at the side of the cockpit. As the plane accelerates down the runway for takeoff, at about 80 knots the pilot stops using the small steering wheel.

when they taxi they use this steering wheel thing at the side of cockpit, but when they takeoff, do they use the rudders to keep the plane in line?
