If only Pavarotti sang like Sir Thomas Allen on the BBC version.. it would be killer.. but instead he murdered the soul of reed...and why would reed agree to continue doing this anyway.. didn't they rehearse before went live??..

...but it's better laughing than crying, no? Just joking. I sort of agree, and so does Lou it seems (watch his glance at 1:22!). But I always find these bombastic "covers" of great song fascinating in some strange way.

With all great respect to the late great Pavoratti, may his memory be a blessing, this is not a song that needed an operatic treatment. It works best almosr recited matter of factly, the overwrought over-emotional part when Pavarotti burst into his aria almost made me burst out laughing--but when Lou Reed sings I want to cry. This was a terrible idea! |
