Keep your subject in the dark and pick a bright background then use a slow shutter sync, or second curtain shutter setting on your flash, this will give your background extra time to expose before the flash fires exposing the subject.

If you want to avoid the flash and a slow shutter speed, but still record night lights, then your only hope is to use the maximum ISO with the lens aperture at its smallest f-number. If you have any more Qs, feel free to post in the dslrtips section of the cameralabs . com forums...

but is there anyway doing so without having to use the flash? it tends to create shadow which irritates me alot.

Someone just asked this two posts comments down! Just follow the night tutorial at dslrtips . com but force your flash to fire. The flash will illuminate the person and any movement will be mostly invisible - but ask them to stay as still as possible anyway!

Thanks for al the quality vids. I've recently bought a Canon 450D ad was starting to get a little overwhelmed with the different settings.

It's surprisingly easy! Just follow the tutorial at dslrtips . com and force your flash to fire. The flash will illumionate the person and any movement will be mostly invisible - but ask them to stay as still as possible anyway!

is there any tips when trying to get a picture with a human subject while trying to get a good exposure of the background. Is it going to be a problem since its hard to get the person completely still.

Thank you for a very useful video.

Noise is the texture and random specks you see in shadows or on flat areas of colour (like a blue sky) on a photo. As the ISO increases, so does the noise. PS - Don't forget to check the actual dslrtips . com site for more tips, and also the dslrtips section on the cameralabs forums if you have any questions...
