The issues relating to piracy predate the financial crises by many years. Now you attempt to bring up a relatively recent event to deny an effect a decade old.Gartner Research estimated that piracy cost the economy tens of billions of dollars. And that study is three years old.You rae simply denying that massive crime does not have massive effects. This makes no sense.

1. Are you talking to yourself? Ad hominem attacks are pointless.2. The RIAA made no such claims.3. There is NO inflation in the music industry. And I haven't raised my prices in 12 years, even while I add function.4. You are demanding these are luxury goods when ten minutes ago you were demanding they were necessities. The rationalizations people make for crime are truly astounding.

All of the market analytics I have seen on the issue indicates that the reduced sales of media is more properly attributed to total market regression resulting from the FINANCIAL CRISES going on in the US economy, and NOT directly attributable to piracy. This does not mean that piracy does not have an effect-- it DOES-- however, it does punch the argument that piracy is the single handed antichrist of the media industry, since the figures just dont support it.

I dont suppose the word "Objectivity" is in your vocabulary.Let us suppose for a minute, that the run-away inflation and FRAUDULENT claims from software and recording industry moguls were not in any way held at bay--- We would be paying absurd prices for digital media regularly, while the RIAA and Co claim that losses in revinue are the direct result of piracy, citing lost sales as evidence- Oh- wait- THEY DO THAT NOW! My bad!Lost Sales in a recessedeconomy over LUXURY GOODS is a non-sequitor!

There are studies that claim crime is a barometer of marketing efficacy. So what? Piracy is causing serioius damage to music, software, films, millions of workers and the economy as a whole. The people that try to convince children that crime is OK are child-abusers. Why not just steal everything and completely destroy the economy?
wierdw (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
Legitimate in terms of legality, or in terms of efficacy? There are several economic studies which suggest that piracy is a valuable barometer of marketing efficacy.

Wow. You actually believe theft is a legitimate method of decreasing inflation. Mind-boggling.It has the opposite effect. First, your claim that every engineer at Boeing steals software is ridiculous. If so, the company making the software would be bankrupt. Second, software is NOT inflationary. It is cheaper by function every year. It is one of the few non-inflationary areas. Third, why would Boeing not give its engineers needed software? I know people at Boeing IT and this is nonsense.

It costs vast amounts of money to create software. Particularly modern 3D modeling software. Of course piracy increases the price since pirates don't pay their fair share of the development costs. If we starting putting some of these people in prison where they belong, the price will come down and become more affordable. That's what law enforcement is about. Reducing the cost of crime. |
