LOL agreed... wait, the funding was part of that 700 billion bucks blown on the assholes on wallstreet who used it for thousand dollar lapdances and hunting trips to europe. Wait, did i say that aloud?

The technology for better shuttle is here, the funding aint!
jigsaw1169 (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
They need to scrap the shuttle, they should go back to Apollo type hardware. Walt Cunningham told me that NASA has lost the plot, imagine where we would be now if we were still using upgraded Apollo hardware. We wasted 30 years with the shuttle, now we are going back and start again with Orion, which is too big and too heavy. Give me just one billion I would have a man back on the moon within 3 years, using Soyuz hardware.

see, i think that NASA needs to develop a sort of 'armor' for the shuttle instead of just using that stuff they use right now. Instead of one layer of thermal shielding, how about (starting from the shuttle skin) 1/2" thermal shield, 1/4" thick titanium alloy, 1/2" thermal shield, 1/4" titanium, 3/4" thermal shielding. The armor would have a 2x redundacy, and the titanium would protect against projectiles breaching the thermal blanket and exposing the hull.

Agreed. Back in the 60s and 70s NASA wasnt the group of pussies they are right now. They knew what they were doing, they knew the risk, and every time an astronaut strapped his ass to a rocket, he knew there was a chance he would never set foot on Earth again.

great video in the most sincerest meaning of it, with sympathy, Irish boy,

Go back to the good old days when to be an astronaut they had to have the right stuff and put their ass on the line to further the cause. Now NASA are so worried about risk nothing gets done. Even with 50/50 odds to survive a mission returning to the Moon there are those that would take those odds China and India will be walking on the moon when NASA are still worried about taking the risk.

gbop63, Yyou have to understand the corporate environment, and NASA surely is just that. No one ever takes blame or responsibility for anything. And nothing is ever bad. Everything is coming up roses. That whole environment can only lead to disaster, and Columbia and Challenger are larger-than-life examples of that. |
