Actually, the police officer' said, in the book that is, that the writing on the note that was found didn't resemble Kurt's at all - it was messy, and was hard to read. Also, it is strange that the gun was right next to his hand after the incident and the fingerprints found on the weapon weren't his(the police couldn't identify the fingerprints). For me, this was a planned killing-Kurt said himself that his family were too important to him, so I don't think that he would've considered suicide.
